Sound Level Meters

A sound level meter is a measuring instrument used to assess noise or sound levels by measuring sound pressure. Often referred to as a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, decibel (dB) meter, noise meter or noise dosimeter, a sound level meter uses a microphone to capture sound. The sound is then evaluated within the sound level meter and acoustic measurement values are shown on the display of the sound level meter. The most common unit of acoustic measurement for sound is the decibel (dB); however, some sound level meter devices also determine the equivalent continuous sound level (Leq) and other acoustic parameters. With a portable sound level meter, industrial hygiene and workplace safety professionals can measure sound levels in multiple locations to ensure environmental conditions fall within recommended exposure limits (RELs). Some sound level meter devices can be permanently installed for continuous monitoring of sound levels at a work or job site.

Gas Analyzers

Geiger Counters

A geiger counter detects nuclear radiation by measuring the emission of ionizing radiation of alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. Also referred to as a radiation detector, a geiger counter consists of two main elements: the processing electronics and the geiger tube. The geiger tube is filled with low-pressure inert gas like helium, argon or neon. If radioactive radiation occurs, the inert gas is ionized. An anode within the geiger tube registers the quantity of ionized particles numerically correlating with the strength of the radioactive radiation. The radioactivity measurement is then displayed on the LCD screen of the geiger counter or radiation detector.It is very important to measure radioactivity as well as to classify radioactivity values. For example, terrestrial gamma radiation is measured according to general values from 0.03 - 0.3 µSv/h (microsievert / hour). This "normal" oscillation range is conditioned by natural radioactive elements in the ground such as uranium and potassium. To calculate this factor, one must take into consideration cosmic radiation. A hygrometer is a device used to measure humidity. Many hygrometer products also measure temperature. A hygrometer that measures both humidity and temperature often is referred to as a thermo-hygrometer. PCE Instruments (PCE) offers a wide variety of hygrometer products used to measure the relative humidity of the air.Since humidity is an important factor in many sectors including but not limited to manufacturing, agriculture, construction, restoration, remediation and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), PCE also carries a number of hygrometer devices designed for specific applications such as measuring the humidity in bales of pressed hay or in rolls of paper. A hygrometer also can be used to evaluate heat stress risk in hot work environments like boiler rooms, factories, construction sites and commercial bakeries. To accurately assess heat stress risk, a hygrometer capable of detecting and classifying temperature in relation to the amount of moisture content in the air is recommended. The global standard description for heat stress is the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index (WBGT). A combination hygrometer / thermometer, or thermo-hygrometer, can be used to verify the integrity of the cold chain during the transport and warehousing of refrigerated food and pharmaceutical products. This versatile and popular style of hygrometer also is ideal for evaluating the performance of HVAC systems in industrial, commercial and residential properties. If the humidity indoors is too high, mold can occur. Certain types of mold cause respiratory problems and other negative health effects for people living or working in the surrounding environment. In addition, mold that has permeated into the walls or roof of a structure must be removed for safety reasons. Mold remediation and removal, also called mold damage restoration, can be a costly endeavor, which is why preventative monitoring of the humidity indoors is preferable whenever possible.

A gauss meter displays electromagnetic wave measurements in Gauss (G), milliGauss (mG), milliTesla (mT) or microTesla (µT) units. A gauss meter can detect either static (DC) permanent (rare-earth) magnetic or dynamic (AC) electromagnetic fields (EMFs), or both. Thus, it is important to review the specifications of a gauss meter prior to purchase to ensure suitability for the intended application.Neodymium (NdFeB) permanent magnets are among the world's strongest and most widely used magnets. When testing magnets made of neodymium or other rare-earth elements, a gaussmeter or magnetometer capable of measuring DC magnetic fields is required. However, most electromagnetic fields encountered are generated by AC currents. Examples include electrical power lines, transformers and wiring for overhead lighting, solar panels and other electrical devices and equipment. Electromagnetic fields from electrical installations are believed to cause feelings of nervousness, anxiety and paranoia in EMF-sensitive human beings.Most gaussmeters offered by PCE Instruments can be calibrated and certified according to DIN ISO 9000 standards for an additional fee.
