Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) has the promise of producing solar cells with high cell efficiencies, which result in a reduction in the cost of operating a PV module. However, a CPV system requires the integration of CPV solar cells, modules and CPV optics into one efficient system. OAI’s focus is CPV cell testing methodology. The CPV cells can now be tested using OAI’s advanced standalone CPV Simulators for low dose and high dose configurations. The low dose CPV Solar Simulator provides exposure up to 50 Suns, whereas, the high dose CPV Solar Simulator provides exposure up to 1500 Suns. The low and high dose simulators provide exposure in varying Sun concentrations in various beam sizes from 1.5cm x 1.5cm to 7.5cm x 7.5cm, and may be configured with OAI’s I-V Test Systems.

A 2.5kW xenon ozone free lamp is used as the light source. Flashlight Solar Simulators have the advantage of negligible temperature change to the solar cell. For this reason, they are primarily used in cell and module production environments. Also, they are a more budgetary alternative if large cell areas are to be illuminated, because it is easier to have excellent light uniformity on areas of 8 in x 8 in or larger. So, this type of solar simulator is also used for analysis of large area thin film solar cells. But care must be taken, as some materials (e.g. CIGS) have long inherent time constants, so that the pulse length (better: flash plateau) must be chosen accordingly.

Solar Cell Testers are integrated systems incorporating Solar Simulator and I-V Measurement systems. PET offers Standard and Advance IV Measurement software. PET Cell Testers are capable of measuring a diverse range of solar cell parameters such as Isc,Voc, Imax,Vmax, Pmax, FF, Rsh, Rs and η cell conversion efficiency, complete light and dark I-V curves. All that needs to be done to test a cell is to load the cell, make electrical probes contact and press “Measure” icon on the I-V Measurement System software. The software will automatically open the Solar Simulator shutter, perform the test and close the shutter after the test is complete. The design is modular in nature and can be easily upgraded. Some options can added at a later time.

This type of solar simulator uses Xenon high pressure arc lamps as light source. These lamps have a colour temperature near 5800 K, so it is feasible to filter the light output to an excellent AM 1.5 spectrum. The LumiSun-50™ is a high power, multi-wavelength LED solar simulator that meets IEC 60904-9 Class AAA for spectral match, uniformity of irradiance, and temporal stability. The LumiSun-50 achieves a spatially uniform illumination field from a chip-on-board (COB), multiple-wavelength LED die array. The field of illumination is 50 x 50 mm at a working distance of 200 mm. The LumiSun-50 includes a driver/controller which individually provides constant current to each die in the COB array. Total irradiance of 1.1 sun units is provided and can be decreased to 0.1 suns. The LED light source of the LumiSun-50 is contained within an air-cooled housing that can rotate the angular beam alignment. Adjustment and setting of the optimum light path working distance is visually facilitated by a converging pair of red dot laser pointers.

Filtered MHG lighting is a mature technology used since the 80’s for larger solar simulators inside environmental test chambers. MHG lamps are filled with a mixture of mercury, halides and rare earth elements which vaporize during ignition, generating a plasma. After a few minutes, the plasma reaches thermal equilibrium and emits a quasi-continuous spectrum (when properly filtered) similar to global solar radiation.
