The Atlas ESR provides instant measurement of a capacitor's ESR and it's capacitance value. Using the supplied gold plated probes (removable), the Atlas ESR can measure ESR down to a resolution of 0.01 ohms, up to 40 ohms. It can even measure ESR for capacitors that are in-circuit. Measurements are made at the industry standard frequency of 100kHz. Probes are now removable, allowing 2mm compatible probes to be fitted. This is true of semiconductor junction capacitances, varactors, and some ceramic capacitors (especially X5R). In these cases the impedance is a function of the DC bias on the device. The Picotest DC bias injector (J2130A) is used for this purpose during impedance measurements.

For the anode, tantanum is used together with tantalum oxide dielectric. This construction gives polymer capacitors all the advantages of traditional tantalum capacitors while reducing equivalent series resistance (ESR) and eliminating manganese dioxide, which is a source of catastrophic failure in tranditional tantalum capacitors.
